Year 6 24/09/17

This week in Maths we will be looking at long multiplication using the column method. The children have used a variety of methods to solve multiplication problems in the past and now we will be developing their efficient use of the column method to multiply larger numbers.

In order to best support your child, it would be great if you could find some time to allow some extra practice at home.

For those who feel their child is already pretty fluent using this method, get them to have a look on http://nrich.maths.org/5612 - here they show a range of multiplication methods and challenge the children to demonstrate their understanding. It would be interesting to see if they can get to grips with the method using the lines! I would love them to show the rest of the class.

One step further would be investigating how to use this method with decimals (this is not something we will doing this week but will extend the learning of your child).

I look forward to seeing the results!
